2001
Dr. Deborah Kenny, a former teacher and Time Warner executive, assembles a group of educators, community leaders and business leaders to create a new kind of public school in Harlem.

2002
Harlem Village Academy is the first organization in the history of New York State to receive two charters simultaneously, both unanimously authorized by the State University of New York and unanimously approved by the New York Board of Regents.
2003
With seed funding from The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the first Harlem Village Academy middle school opens in September.
2005
Our second middle school – Harlem Village Academy Leadership – opens in September.
2006
Harlem Village Academy 7th grade students rank #1 in mathematics of all non-selective public school students in New York State. Chancellor Klein visits Harlem Village Academy Leadership and Mayor Bloomberg declares “Harlem Village Academies Day” in New York City.
2007
Our third school – Harlem Village Academy High School – opens in September.
2007
Harlem Village Academy 8th grade students rank #1 in mathematics of all non-selective public school students in New York State.
